The Back Alley

backalley'The Back Alley' was a fundamental part of a very high percentage of housing in Salford. They have largely ceased to exist though not completely, a major inner city feature before housing clearances began to radically change the face of Salford. 'The Back Alley' played an important role in life of the community. The condition of these spaces could range from the awful, to tidy, and cared for spaces. A place to hang out washing. A very important resource where children could play outside of their homes in comparative safety. An arena of greeting, chat, and gossip. Privacy, something of a rare commodity in such neighbourhoods, a place where courting couples could under the cover of darkness spend time together, hopefully unobserved, There is a fascinating article on-line looking at 'The Back Alley' in considerable depth. https://www.ragpickinghistory.co.uk/.../cracks-in-the...
